Nicky prefers books to people and shelving tomes in the school library to recess. When she learns her beloved library will be closed for a week, she dreads the following week's recess, where everyone but her seems to have found their crowd. At her mother's diner over the weekend, she meets a poetry-reciting biker who has her own group of nonconformist friends. The experience is eye-opening for Nicky who for the first time sees a group of people of different races and sizes together and she realizes she doesn't have to be alone. The thought stays with her the following week, and it helps her meet a new book-loving friend on the playground.
