The Vignes sisters ran away from their small, southern black town at the age of sixteen. Despite being identical twins, one returns to their small town many years later, with a black daughter. The other sister passes for white and her husband and neighbors know nothing about her past. As the years pass and the sisters' daughters meet, all four women grapple with the influence of the past and how it can shape decisions, desires, and expectations.
