Thirteen-year-old Jojo, a young black Mississippi boy, is being raised by his grandparents, and is forced to become a man too soon because of his mother's meth addiction, his father's imprisonment, and his young sibling who needs him. When Jojo's dad is released from prison, his mother packs up the car with her children and drives towards the penitentiary; and the nightmarish journey makes Jojo question who the men are in his life, and what kind of man he wants to be.
