Mayor Tomo, a Panamanian-American, falls in love with fifteen-year-old Maribel, whose parents, Arturo and Alma Rivera, have moved the family to America seeking medical care following Maribel's accident. The romance begins a relationship between the Rivera and Toro families based on conflicting feelings of guilt, love, and responsibility.
