In a future world, there is no food and everyone takes medication to ward off hunger that Thalia's parents helped create, thereby giving Thalia's family elite status. When Thalia meets a boy from the underground that is trying to bring food back, she starts to feel hunger for the first time. The pair sets out on a quest to find real food to quell their hunger.
