During the period between 1948 and 1956 thousands of Americans went to war in Korea and Vietnam, the NAACP became active, Ralph Bunche became the first African American to win the Nobel Peace Prize and Gwendolyn Brooks became the first to receive the Pulitzer Prize for poetry, and the Supreme Court declared segregation to be illegal.
