From his first married years to the end of his life, Harry (Rabbit) Angstrom tries to understand himself, his wife, and his life. The frustrations of family life force him to run away. Ten years later as a suburbanite, he is deserted by his wife who wants to find herself. Problems with their son and daughter-in-law plague Harry and his wife through their middle age and beyond.
