Dystopian novel about a young woman living on an island controlled by the Memory Police who oversee the daily disappearance of objects--roses, perfume, birds--from the presence and minds of the islanders; people who are unable to forget or rid themselves of the objects are arrested. When the narrator discovers her editor is about to be arrested she conspires with a neighbor to hide him in a room below her home. The three form a community of sorts who try to thrive in spite of their dire circumstances.
