The film follows Booker's life from his birth into slavery through the end of the Civil War and his post-slavery years working menial jobs to the realization of his dream for an education. Told through the eyes of nine-year-old Booker T. Washington, viewers witness the end of the Civil War, the cruelties that endured after slavery was abolished and the hard work that led Washington to education and true freedom.
