Twelve-year-old Blessing, seeing her family falling apart after her mother decides to leave her cheating father and move in with her family in a town without running water or electricity, finds comfort in the care of her grandmother who teaches her the ways of the midwife in rural Nigeria, but is faced with the realities of the world when she is exposed to genital mutilation and the environmental damage caused by British and American oil companies.
