Twelve-year-old Seven Salazar knows she'll be placed into the most powerful coven with her best friend, but during her ceremony, she isn't placed into any of the five covens and is labeled as a Spare. Spare covens aren't as powerful and are looked down upon by everyone else. To make matters even worse, Seven and the two other Spares perform the magic circle to seal their coven and cement themselves as sisters, but the spell doesn't work, meaning they will be stuck as Witchlings forever and lose their powers. The only way for them to gain their full powers is to complete an impossible task. Seven, Valley, and Thorn must work together to fell a Nightbeast, and they learn to trust each other, despite their differences.
