Relates the true story of Alice Mitchell and Freda Ward, who fell in love with each other in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1892, and planned to make a life together by having Alice pose as a man so she could provide support for them as a married couple. But their forbidden love was discovered and they were separated. Alice, her heart broken, publicly slashed Freda's throat to prevent her from being with anyone else, and was subsequently tried for insanity and sent to an asylum, where she died a few years later.
